In the Blue

Yesterday I ventured to the quaint town of New Harmony,IN. New Harmony is located right near the Wabash river in Southern Indiana. The town is full of charming little houses, historic buildings, art galleries, and antique shops. This weekend was the annual Kunstfest festival. Kunstfest is a German festival that celebrates the town's heritage. There are vendors all over town selling arts, crafts, and delicious German food. I recommend the apple cider, apple dumplings with vanilla ice cream, and the fried dough bread with apple butter.

I also visited the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art http://www.usi.edu/nhgallery/index2.asp. The gallery was full of amazing, beautiful inspiring pieces. There were quite a few things I would like to have left with! I made the happy discovery of stumbling upon a solo exhibit of an art professor that I had in college. Rowland Ricketts III is a textile artist that works exclusively in indigo dye using traditional dying techniques. His exhibit titled Immanent Blue is running until October 4th at the gallery.Large panels of cloth dyed with indigo hang from the ceiling and sweep over dried indigo plants on the floor. The motion of the translucent indigo cloth blowing in the room creates a feeling of gentle ocean waves. Check out his and his wife's website at http://www.rickettsindigo.com/.

Here are a few photos that I took yesterday...blue seemed to be the color of the day.

Hi! Hello! Bonjour!

Dear Friends,

This is my first official post on my blog Postcards from Julia! I had listed “start a blog” on http://www.43things.com/ (fun site!) as one of my 43 things that I want to do. It was one of my easier goals…#31. Become an eccentric millionaire is going to be somewhat of a challenge, but I’m optimistic. I have a bit of a thing for mail, hence the name of my blog. I love getting letters, emails, cards, sending postcards, receiving postcards, movies about letters, and so on. Isn’t there just something nice about a handwritten letter?! No one does this anymore. Speaking of movies I love about letters.....

One of my all time favorite movies is “Shop around the Corner” directed in 1940 by Ernst Lubitsch. It stars James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan who play shop employees that cannot stand one another but end up falling in love through letters that they are writing to each other as anonymous pen pals. Other favorite flicks like it are “You’ve Got Mail” and “In the Good Old Summertime.”

My hope for this blog is that I can share my art, stories, inspirations, and all sorts of tid bits.

Au Revoir!

Julia
